Sculptra stimulates your own collagen to lift, firm, and smooth — gradual, natural-looking results from a physician injector.
Sculptra is a unique injectable: instead of adding volume directly like hyaluronic acid filler, Sculptra is a collagen biostimulator. The active ingredient is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible synthetic polymer that’s been used for decades in dissolvable sutures.
When injected into the deep dermis or subcutaneous tissue, PLLA acts as a scaffold that triggers the body’s natural fibroblast response. Over 8–12 weeks, your body builds new collagen around the PLLA particles. The PLLA itself is gradually metabolized and excreted; the new collagen remains for 2–3 years.
The effect: gradual, natural-looking facial restoration that doesn’t appear “filled” or “done.” Patients often hear “you look refreshed” rather than “what did you have done?”
Mid-face volume loss: the cheeks, temples, and pre-auricular areas that lose volume with age. Sculptra rebuilds the structural foundation of the face.
Jawline and lower face restoration: jawline definition, marionette lines, jowl support. Sculptra restores structure that aged or lost weight too quickly.
Hand rejuvenation: aging hands often show vascular prominence and tendon visibility. Sculptra restores volume and softens the appearance.
Body Sculptra (“Sculptra butt lift”): non-surgical buttock augmentation, hip dip correction, decolletage rejuvenation. Different protocol than facial.
Acne scarring: particularly atrophic boxcar and rolling scars. The collagen induction smooths skin texture over multiple sessions.
Cellulite improvement: Sculptra in dimpled skin areas improves texture by stimulating dermal collagen.
Consultation: Dr. Indianos assesses facial structure, identifies treatment areas, photographs baseline, and designs a multi-session plan. Sculptra typically requires 2–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart for full effect.
Reconstitution: Sculptra vials are reconstituted with sterile water and lidocaine, then allowed to settle for 24+ hours before treatment. This is a meaningful protocol detail — rushed reconstitution leads to higher nodule risk.
Treatment: Topical numbing applied 30 minutes before injection. Multiple deep injection points using cannula or needle technique. Vigorous massage post-injection (and continued at home for 5 days, 5 minutes 5 times daily — the “5-5-5” rule).
Onset: immediate post-injection swelling resembles fullness, which subsides over 1–2 weeks. The real Sculptra result builds gradually over 8–12 weeks as collagen forms.
Duration: results last 2–3 years. Touch-up treatments maintain longer.
Mechanism: Sculptra stimulates collagen; HA fillers add HA volume directly.
Onset: Sculptra results build over 8–12 weeks; HA fillers show immediate volume.
Duration: Sculptra 2–3 years; HA fillers 6–18 months.
Reversibility: Sculptra cannot be dissolved; HA fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase.
Best for: Sculptra for global volume loss, structural support, gradual age-restoration. HA fillers for specific shape changes, lips, tear troughs, immediate corrections.
Dr. Indianos often combines Sculptra (for foundational volume) with HA fillers (for shape refinement and specific features).
