What is Sculptra and How It Works
If your face has started to look a little hollow or tired, and you want it to look like you again rather than like you had work done, Sculptra is worth a conversation. It is a collagen biostimulator: instead of adding volume directly the way hyaluronic acid filler does, it is designed to prompt your own skin to rebuild collagen. The active ingredient is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible synthetic polymer that has been used for decades in dissolvable sutures.
At Bespoke, Dr. Carolyn Indianos, MD sees you and injects you herself, in a private ground-floor suite at 5010 W Newberry Rd, Suite C in Gainesville, with easy parking. Call or text (352) 450-1004 to book your Sculptra visit.

How Sculptra builds collagen
When injected into the deep dermis or subcutaneous tissue, PLLA acts as a scaffold that triggers the body's natural fibroblast response. Over about 8 to 12 weeks, your body builds new collagen around the PLLA particles. The PLLA itself is gradually metabolized and excreted, and in clinical studies the resulting collagen increases have been reported to persist for up to about two years.
What patients choose it for: a gradual, natural-looking restoration that does not look "filled" or "done." Because collagen builds over weeks, patients often hear "you look refreshed" rather than "what did you have done?"
What Sculptra Treats
FDA-approved uses
Cheek wrinkles (FDA-approved)
Sculptra is FDA-approved for correction of fine lines and wrinkles in the cheek region in immunocompetent adults (approved 2023). Using it to volumize the broader midface, temples, or pre-auricular area is a different, off-label use aimed at restoring volume rather than correcting a wrinkle.
Nasolabial folds and other facial wrinkles (FDA-approved)
Sculptra is FDA-approved for correction of shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles, including lines like marionette lines, in immunocompetent adults. Using Sculptra to contour or lift the jawline itself, or for general jowl support rather than correcting a specific wrinkle, is off-label.
Off-label uses
Hand rejuvenation (off-label)
Some physicians use Sculptra on the hands to soften the appearance of vein and tendon prominence. This is not an FDA-approved use, and Dr. Indianos will discuss the off-label nature and the evidence with you before treating this area.
Body areas (off-label)
Some physicians use Sculptra for non-surgical buttock volumizing, hip dip correction, or decolletage rejuvenation. None of these are FDA-approved uses; they use a different protocol than facial treatment, and Dr. Indianos will discuss the off-label nature and the evidence with you.
Acne scarring (off-label)
Some physicians use Sculptra's collagen-stimulating effect on atrophic boxcar and rolling scars over multiple sessions. This is not an FDA-approved use.
Cellulite improvement (off-label)
Using Sculptra in dimpled skin areas to improve texture is not an FDA-approved use, and evidence for this application is limited.
Sculptra Treatment Plan
- Step 1
Consultation
Dr. Indianos studies your facial structure, talks through what you want to see in the mirror, photographs your baseline, and builds a plan around you. Sculptra typically takes 2 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for full effect. Ready to start? Call or text (352) 450-1004.
- Step 2
Preparation
Each Sculptra vial is prepared with sterile water and lidocaine and allowed to settle for 24+ hours before your visit, a careful step that helps lower the chance of small bumps under the skin and keeps treatment comfortable.
- Step 3
Treatment
Numbing cream goes on about 30 minutes before, so you stay comfortable. Dr. Indianos then places Sculptra at multiple deep points with a cannula or needle and massages the area. You continue the massage at home for 5 days, 5 minutes, 5 times a day (the "5-5-5" routine), and we walk you through it before you leave.
- Step 4
Onset and duration
Onset: Immediate post-injection swelling resembles fullness, which subsides over 1 to 2 weeks. The real Sculptra result builds gradually over about 8 to 12 weeks as collagen forms.
Duration: In clinical studies, results have been reported to last up to about two years, and touch-up treatments can help maintain results longer.
Sculptra stimulates collagen; HA fillers add HA volume directly.
Sculptra results build over about 8 to 12 weeks; HA fillers show immediate volume.
Sculptra has been reported to last up to about two years in studies; HA fillers 6 to 18 months.
Sculptra cannot be dissolved; HA fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase.
Sculptra for global volume loss, structural support, gradual age-restoration. HA fillers for specific shape changes, lips, tear troughs, immediate corrections.
Dr. Indianos often combines Sculptra (for foundational volume) with HA fillers (for shape refinement and specific features).
